Coyotes 4, Red Wings 1

DETROIT (AP) - Curtis Joseph made himself right at home at Joe Louis Arena.

The Phoenix goalie stopped 36 shots in his first game in Detroit since leaving the Red Wings, leading the Coyotes to a 4-1 victory Saturday night.

``Anytime you've played in a place and you get a win against your old team, it feels good,'' said Joseph, who signed as a free agent with Phoenix after playing for Detroit from 2002-04.

Mike Leclerc, Zbynek Michalek, Mike Johnson and Mike Comrie scored power-play goals for Phoenix. Comrie's was an empty-net effort with 12.8 seconds remaining.

Tomas Holmstrom scored his third goal in two games for the Red Wings (12-2-1).

Joseph, who lost to Detroit 2-0 on Oct. 15 in Arizona, did his best work in the third period as Detroit outshot Phoenix 19-1.

The Coyotes killed four Red Wings' power plays in the third period and blanked them in seven chances for the game.

``Certainly our penalty killing was the story tonight,'' said Joseph. ``Guys blocked shots and sacrificed body parts.

The Red Wings' Brendan Shanahan had an apparent goal waved off 8:37 into the third period, when it was ruled that he kicked the puck in.

``CuJo did what he was supposed to do,'' Shanahan said. ``He made some key, key saves.''

The Coyotes scored twice on the power play in the second period to take a 3-1 lead.

Michalek's goal on a shot from the point broke a 1-all tie 8:22 into the period and Johnson's one-time slap shot from the outside edge of the right circle with 45 seconds left gave Phoenix a two-goal lead.

Phoenix was 4-for-9 with the manpower advantage.

``We can do a better job with our discipline,'' said Detroit coach Mike Babcock, who was upset by the number of penalties his team took.

Holmstrom opened the scoring 2:23 into the game, when he put a shot through Joseph's pads from the slot.

``CuJo made a couple of key saves when it was 1-0,'' Coyotes coach Wayne Gretzky said.

Leclerc's 5-on-3 power-play goal tied it for Phoenix with 2:58 left in the first period.

``Special teams played such a big role,'' Johnson said. ``Getting that 5-on-3 goal was huge. We were on our heels to that point.''

Notes: Detroit G Manny Legace missed his second game because of a slightly sprained knee. D Jason Woolley (groin) missed his sixth game. ... It also was Phoenix associate coach Barry Smith's first game at Joe Louis Arena since serving in that capacity with the Red Wings from 1993-04. ... With an assist on Holmstrom's goal, Pavel Datsyuk stretched his points streak to eight games. ... After getting a cross-checking penalty late in the first period, Detroit D Chris Chelios got an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, a 10-minute misconduct and a game misconduct. The Red Wings played with only five defensemen for the remainder of the game.
