Blues 3, Red Wings 2

DETROIT (AP) - Two St. Louis Blues with local ties had a lot fun at the Detroit Red Wings' expense.

Former Red Wings player Mike Sillinger and Detroit native Doug Weight scored in the third period to lead St. Louis to a 3-2 victory Saturday night.

Jamal Mayers also scored to help the Blues win their second straight after losing 11 in a row. Curtis Sanford made 33 saves in the victory, St. Louis' first over Detroit in nine games (0-7-1) since Oct. 29, 2003.

``Coming off a stretch where you lose 11 games and then beat Columbus and to come in here and get a repeat performance is a big confidence builder,'' Sanford said.

Mikael Samuelsson and Brendan Shanahan scored for Detroit, which lost its fourth straight.

Sillinger, who was drafted by Detroit in 1989 and played for the Red Wings from 1990-95, scored from the slot after taking Petr Cajanek's pass from behind the net 7 minutes into the third period.

``I still have a lot of ties here in Detroit,'' Sillinger said. ``You kind of always want to beat the team that drafted you.''

Weight scored on the power play 1:46 later with a shot from the left circle.

``We're all still kids. I don't care how long you've played,'' Weight said. ``It's still fun to go out on the ice and play against these guys. I grew up coming here and watching them. And it's always nice to have family and friends watching.''

Shanahan got his 12th on a slap shot from the right circle with 51.4 seconds remaining, after goalie Manny Legace had been pulled for the extra attacker.

``Obviously, we didn't have any energy,'' Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. ``They came in with a lot of energy, got themselves together. Got us behind the 8-ball and we had to try to scramble out of it.''

Mayers opened the scoring 7:32 into the second period with his team-leading seventh goal. He put in the rebound of his own tip of a shot from the point by Eric Weinrich.

``Most of the time they were sitting back and letting us skate with the puck through the neutral zone,'' Detroit defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom said. ``And then they jumped us at the red line so we couldn't really get anything going.''

Samuelsson tied it at 1 for the Red Wings with 4:17 remaining in the second period. He tipped Jiri Fischer's cross-crease pass, off of a rush, into an empty net for his ninth goal of the season.

Notes: All three of the active U.S.-born defensemen who have played at least 1,000 games participated in the game: Chris Chelios and Mathieu Schneider for Detroit and Weinrich for St. Louis. ... Samuelsson's goal snapped Sanford's shutout streak at 106:12. Sanford has stopped 94 of 99 shots in his last three games.
