DETROIT (AP) - The Columbus Blue Jackets took the hard way in becoming the first team to rally to victory in the third period against the Detroit Red Wings.

Jaroslav Balastik capped a comeback with the only goal of the shootout to give the Blue Jackets a 5-4 win over Detroit on Saturday night.

David Vyborny, Rostislav Klesla and Rick Nash each had a goal and an assist, and Manny Malhotra also tallied for Columbus, which scored four times in the third period after trailing 3-0. Ron Hainsey added two assists.

"To stop those three guys is a feat in itself," Blue Jackets coach Gerard Gallant said.

Pascal Leclaire, who also made 40 saves in regulation and overtime, turned aside Pavel Datsyuk, Jason Williams and Henrik Zetterberg in the tiebreaker.

Nash and Vyborny failed for the Blue Jackets against Chris Osgood.

Steve Yzerman, Robert Lang, and Datsyuk each had a goal and an assist, and Johan Franzen also scored for Detroit in regulation. The Red Wings had been 32-0-1 when leading after two.

"We stopped playing and doing the things you need to do to win," Detroit coach Mike Babcock said.

The Red Wings led 3-0 in the third period, but Columbus rallied to take a 4-3 lead on Malhotra's goal with 5:15 left in the third period.

"It was kind of getting to desperation time for us," Malhotra said. "We weren't very happy the way we started the game."

But Datsyuk tied it with 1:50 remaining with a wrist shot from the high slot.

"Shocked and definitely disappointed," forward Mark Mowers said.

Nash pulled Columbus into a 3-3 tie with 5:44 left when he moved in off right wing, cut across the crease and slid the puck past Osgood.

Klesla put Columbus on the board with 7:48 remaining, when he scored on a slap shot from the right point.

Vyborny cut the deficit to 3-2 with 9:21 left when Klesla's shot went in off him.

"We buried our chances," Nash said. "I think we got most of our chances in the third. We were working a lot harder and we owe a lot to Pascal Leclaire."

Franzen gave Detroit a 1-0 lead at 3:23 of the first period when he put a shot in from the slot after knocking down Brendan Shanahan's pass.

Yzerman made it 2-0 with just 22.8 seconds remaining in the opening period, when he tipped Andreas Lilja's shot out of the air.

Lang scored on a shot from the inside edge of the left circle with 7:07 left in the second period.

Notes: Detroit signed RW Mikael Samuelsson to a three-year contract extension. ... Former Red Wings forward Sergei Fedorov was booed every time he touched the puck. ... Red Wings RW Dan Cleary missed his second game with the flu.
