Red Wings 2, Stars 1

DETROIT (AP) -The way the Detroit Red Wings killed penalties, you'd think they were the ones with an advantage.

Kris Draper and Mathieu Schneider scored short-handed goals in the third period to rally Detroit to a 2-1 victory over the Dallas Stars on Monday night.

Dominik Hasek made 20 saves for the Red Wings, who broke a five-game winless streak (0-2-3).

The Red Wings have scored seven short-handed goals this season, but their power play is a NHL-worst 12-for-114 (.105).

"As long as we keep scoring short-handed goals, we don't need to score on the power play," Schneider kidded.

Antti Miettinen scored for Dallas, which had its three-game winning streak snapped.

"A few chances we should have buried and then we gave up a couple goals on the power play and that just killed us," Stars defenseman Philippe Boucher said.

Schneider broke a 1-1 tie with 7:47 remaining with teammate Dan Cleary off for holding.

After taking a pass from Henrik Zetterberg, Schneider blasted a slap shot past Marty Turco from the high slot for his sixth goal.

"Hank made a great play. He was coming with a lot of speed and when he went behind the net, guys were all looking at him," Schneider said. "I saw a big hole in the middle of the ice. He made a perfect pass. I just turned on it and beat him glove side. I just tried to pound it."

Detroit then had to hold off Dallas, which had a 6-on-4 skating advantage when Turco was pulled for an extra attacker as Draper served a holding penalty in the final 44 seconds of the game.

Hasek made a couple of saves in that sequence.

"Most of the time I saw the puck, even the last part of the game when they were playing 6-on-4," he said.

Draper got the Red Wings even at 1 at 3:03 of the third period with Jiri Hudler in the penalty box for tripping. He put the carom of Nicklas Lidstrom's shot off the back boards between Turco's pads

"It was just a one-timer shot," Turco said. "And it came up the boards right to Draper. Stuff happens."

Turco, who made 27 saves, fell to 1-8-5 against the Red Wings.

Dallas opened the scoring 6:22 into the second period, when Miettinen beat Hasek with a one-timer from along the goal line below the left circle. He took a pass from Mike Ribeiro, who was in the high slot, after a turnover by Detroit's Jason Williams.

Dallas was 0-for-5 on the power play, while allowing two goals against. The Red Wings went 0-for-2 when they had the advantage.

Notes: Williams was helped off the ice as he favored his right leg after a hit by Dallas' Niklas Hagman late in the second period and was diagnosed with a charley horse. Williams was playing his fifth game after missing three following a concussion. ... Red Wings LW Johan Franzen missed his third game because of a concussion and sore knee. ... Dallas captain Brenden Morrow didn't play because of a groin strain.
