Kings 4, Red Wings 2
Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) -The Los Angeles Kings finally found a way to beat Detroit, and the needed some help from the Red Wings to do it.

Michael Cammalleri and Lubomir Visnovsky each had a goal and an assist, and Rob Blake also scored to lift the Kings to a 4-2 victory Saturday night.

Coming off a 3-0 win against Columbus on Wednesday, the Kings have posted consecutive regulation victories for the first time since beating St. Louis and the New York Islanders in October.

Mathieu Garon made 32 saves, and Sean Avery added an empty-net goal, helping the Kings snap a 12-game losing streak to the Red Wings. The last time they beat Detroit was on Oct. 12, 2002, at Los Angeles.

"That was my first win against them - and I've been here four years," forward Dustin Brown said. "To win against them was obviously a monkey off our backs. They're they type of team that sits back and waits until you make a mistake. We really keyed in on trying not to make mistakes."

Former Kings defenseman Mathieu Schneider was sent off for hooking with 3:19 left, and Los Angeles capitalized on the ensuing power play. Cammalleri got the puck from Anze Kopitar in the right corner and tried to hit Brown with a centering pass, but Detroit defenseman Danny Markov inadvertently redirected it into his own net with Brown parked at the far post.

"Marko was trying to make a play on it because you can't let it go through," goalie Chris Osgood said. "He actually made a good play on it, trying to block it, but it hit his stick perfectly and it was unfortunate that it went in. If he misses it, the guy (Brown) is going to score into an open net anyway."

Kris Draper and Mikael Samuelsson scored for the Red Wings, 25-11-5 at the midway mark and four points behind Central Division-leading Nashville.

Red Wings center Pavel Datsyuk missed his third straight game because of a groin injury. Defenseman Chris Chelios sat out his fifth straight game and third since two employees were stabbed to death at his Detroit sports bar. Chelios is expected to rejoin the team Monday in Denver.

Referee Kelly Sutherland gave Avery a diving penalty with 7:20 to play, after Detroit's Tomas Holmstrom appeared to trip him in the neutral zone. The ensuing power play resulted in an injury to Samuelsson, who was struck on the right knee by teammate Nicklas Lidstrom's slap shot and had to be helped off the ice.

The Kings erased a 2-0 deficit when Visnovsky and Blake scored less than 2 minutes apart in the second period, victimizing Detroit defenseman Niklas Kronwall on both goals.

"That goal by (Visnovsky) gave us a little more energy and we worked from that," Brown said.

Visnovsky carried the puck into the neutral zone along the right boards, swerved around Kronwall at the base of the circle and banked his 13th goal off Osgood's glove. Blake got the equalizer, cruising down the slot without the puck and scoring his eighth of the season.

"We haven't been playing as well as we can and we've given up a couple of leads lately," Osgood said. "That's what happens when you take penalties. They wore us down. We've been short-handed a lot the last two games and we haven't gotten too many power plays. And anytime that happens, you're spending a lot of time in your own end."

The Red Wings, coming off a 9-3 loss at San Jose, opened the scoring at 2:12 of the first period with Draper's seventh goal. Samuelsson made it 2-0 just 14 seconds into the second period with his 10th.

"They've played us really well lately so there had been lots of frustration, but our team really battled," Kings forward Derek Armstrong said. "We didn't come out of the gate great, but we got a good goaltending performance and everyone contributed."

Notes: The Kings won for only the third time in 18 games when leading scorer Alexander Frolov didn't record a point. ... Cammalleri, who played collegiate hockey at Michigan, assisted on Visnovsky's goal. ... Los Angeles C Alyn McCauley, who scored his first NHL goal against Osgood on Oct. 15, 1997, has one goal and no assists in four games after missing 39 following two knee operations.
