ST. LOUIS (AP) -Bill Guerin is happy to get a little luck sometimes.

Coming off an appearance at the All-Star game earlier in the week, Guerin scored his team-leading 21st goal as he gathered a rebound off a shot from Doug Weight. The puck came off the pads of Detroit goalie Chris Osgood and Guerin slapped it into the goal from about 5 feet away to give the Blues a 2-1 overtime victory.

"It's a hope play," Guerin said. "You just put it on net and funny things happen when you put the puck on net."

Weight carried the puck down the right side and considered several options, including dumping the puck behind the net. Instead, he put a soft pass toward a streaking Barret Jackman who tipped it toward Osgood. The puck either went directly to the Detroit goalie or deflected again - there were conflicting accounts of the play - before Osgood knocked the puck with his blocker and watched as it went directly to Guerin's stick.

Osgood made 18 stops overall, but said trying to keep Guerin from scoring the game-winner was nearly impossible.

"I just tried to get over there as quick as I could," Osgood said. "He probably would have went far side if I would have of made it over there."

It was St. Louis' fourth consecutive win and its seventh in eight games during which they have totaled 15 points. They now have 48 points and hold 11th place in the Western Conference.

The Red Wings have now lost three consecutive games despite several great chances in the third period. Detroit peppered St. Louis goalie Manny Legace throughout the second half of the period and took at least four shots from inside or just outside the crease, each time being denied. Legace finished with 28 saves.

"They just come at you in waves," Legace said. "They're a tough team to play. You've got to weather the storm."

St. Louis looked as if the six days off did more harm than good. The Blues managed only three shots on goal during the first period and often struggled to keep up with the Red Wings.

The teams traded goals less than 2 minutes apart midway through the second period.

Ryan Johnson returned to the ice after sitting out 12 games with a separated shoulder and notched his fifth goal of the season 8 minutes into the second period. Jamal Meyers carried the puck deep into Detroit territory before wristing a shot at Osgood. The rebounded landed at Johnson's feet and he slipped it past Osgood to give the Blues a 1-0 lead.

The lead lasted 1:56 before Detroit's Johan Franzen tied the score. St. Louis defensemen Jamie Rivers and Dennis Wideman went to clear the puck just in front of the net only to hit sticks and leave the puck for Franzen, who beat Legace for his sixth goal.

"It's not going to be a Picasso every night," Guerin said. "We didn't play great for 40 minutes, but we came back in the third and played real solid and just stuck with it."

Notes: St. Louis failed to score on five power-play opportunities and is now 0-25 against Detroit this season. ... It marked the 15th time in coach Andy Murray's 21 games with the team that St. Louis has scored first in a game. They are 10-3-2 in those games. ... This was the Red Wings' eighth overtime game this season. ... The Blues play 10 of their next 14 games at home.
