Red Wings 3, Stars 1

DALLAS (AP) -The Detroit Red Wings didn't let the embarrassment from their previous loss linger.

Henrik Zetterberg notched the go-ahead goal with 4:36 left, after setting up the tying score a little over four minutes earlier, and the Red Wings rallied for a 3-1 victory over the Dallas Stars on Wednesday night.

Detroit was routed by the Philadelphia Flyers - the NHL's worst team - 6-1 on Monday night, and trailed the Stars 1-0 midway through the third period. The Red Wings had trouble solving rookie goalie Mike Smith, who was trying for his second shutout in three games.

He didn't get it.

Pavel Datsyuk tied the game 1-1 at 11:14 with his 18th goal off a setup by Zetterberg, who then gave the Red Wings the lead at 15:24 with his 27th goal on a shot from the high slot.

Mathieu Schneider added an empty-netter with 33 seconds left, assisted by Zetterberg, to ice the victory and snap Dallas' three-game winning streak.

"When we embarrass ourselves, which doesn't happen very often, we respond," Detroit coach Mike Babcock said. "The other night in Philly was a humbling experience, to say the least."

Mike Ribeiro had a second-period, power-play goal for the Stars.

The Red Wings got 17 saves from Chris Osgood, who started despite a broken right index finger. Detroit has won seven of nine.

"We've done that a few times this year," Osgood said of the comeback. "Being down 1-0, you're only a shot away. I thought we stuck to our game plan. We didn't take any unnecessary gambles. We just kept putting the puck on net."

Smith, who finished with 29 saves, was playing in his fourth straight game - two as a starter and two in relief of Stars' No. 1 goalie Marty Turco.

Dallas coach Dave Tippett insists there is no goaltender controversy, that he's simply resting Turco, who made 11 consecutive starts before this four-game stretch.

Another factor influencing Tippett's decision to start Smith, Turco has a career record of 1-8-5 against the Red Wings.

"Smitty gave us a chance to win," Tippett said. "But we didn't play with enough poise, and let their best players take the game over. When you keep giving the puck to them, it's going to come back to bite you. Games like these are hard lessons."

Smith made several difficult saves in the first period that ended with Detroit holding a 12-7 edge in shots.

Dallas moved in front at 6:34 of the second period on Ribeiro's eighth goal. He steered Jussi Jokinen's centering pass into an open net while Osgood was caught out of position.

But the Stars couldn't build on their lead and lost to the Red Wings for the third time in three meetings this season.

"You try to take the positives out of a game like this, but we've got to learn from our mistakes," Ribeiro said. "We've got to put this one behind us and move on."

Notes: The Stars were missing injured forwards Brenden Morrow (wrist), Antti Miettinen and Eric Lindros (lower body), Steve Ott (ankle) and Matthew Barnaby (concussion). ... Detroit's No. 1 goaltender Dominik Hasek sat out because of tendinitis in his right wrist. ... Ladislav Nagy, acquired in a trade with Phoenix on Monday, made his Stars debut on a line with Mike Modano and Jere Lehtinen. ... Osgood sat out the previous eight games. ... Dallas had been unbeaten in six games when Ribeiro scored a goal. ... The Stars were 5-0-1 in their previous six home games.
