Red Wings-Blues Preview
Detroit Red Wings vs. St. Louis Blues

The Detroit Red Wings didn't fare well in their last trip to St. Louis. They'll look for a better result and try to extend their winning streak to six games Thursday when they visit the Blues in the teams' seventh meeting of the season.

The Red Wings (35-14-6) suffered their latest loss at St. Louis on Jan. 26, 2-1 in overtime. Detroit has not lost any game since, running off five consecutive wins - including a 5-3 home victory over the Blues last Friday - to move within one point of Nashville for the Central Division lead and the top spot in the Western Conference.

St. Louis (21-25-8) has gone 1-4 since the Jan. 26 meeting.

Detroit is 4-0-2 in the season series with the Blues, with four of the six games decided by one-goal margins.

The Red Wings extended their overall winning streak and earned their 11th straight home victory Wednesday, 4-2 over the Phoenix Coyotes.

Henrik Zetterberg scored his team-leading 23rd and 24 goals of the season, and added an assist. He has 12 points during Detroit's winning streak, including four in last week's victory over St. Louis.

"It makes it easier to come to the rink," said Zetterberg, who has scored at least one goal in four consecutive games. "We've been working really hard and that's why we're having success.

"The important stuff is to just get it in the net."

Dominik Hasek has been in net for each game of the streak, but could rest Thursday as the Wings play the second of back-to-back games. Rookie Joey McDonald is likely to make his sixth start and try again for his first career victory. McDonald, who is 0-3-1 with a 3.32 goals against average, has not started since Jan. 20.

Ryan Johnson scored St. Louis' only goal in a 2-1 loss to Toronto on Tuesday. Johnson has scored five of his seven goals in his last 10 games, including one in each of the last two matchups with the Red Wings.

Leading scorer Bill Guerin had a prime chance to tie the game late in the third period Tuesday but was stopped by Toronto goaltender Andrew Raycroft's lunging glove save.

"Sometimes you just try to have a little poise and bear down on ones like that because they almost seem too easy," said Guerin, who has 21 goals but hasn't scored since the Blues' most recent win over the Red Wings. "I got great wood on it. It's unfortunate because that would have been a big goal for us."

St. Louis has one of the NHL's worst power-play units, making good on just 13.5 percent of its extra-man opportunities. They've been much worse than that against Detroit, going 0-for-31 with the man advantage this season.

Blues goalie Manny Legace, who spent the last six seasons with the Red Wings, is 2-3-0 with a 3.03 GAA against his former team in 2006-07.

St. Louis could be without Martin Rucinsky, who's fourth on the team with 33 points, after he left Tuesday's game with a groin injury.
