Flames-Red Wings Preview
Calgary Flames vs. Detroit Red Wings

The Calgary Flames don't want to dig themselves a hole too early in the season.

They'll be trying again for their first win on Wednesday as they visit the Detroit Red Wings.

The Flames (0-1-1) opened their season with two home losses, including Saturday's 4-3 overtime defeat against Vancouver. Calgary has not started a season with consecutive losses since 2002-03 - the last time it failed to make the playoffs.

The Flames, who opened this season with a 3-2 loss to Philadelphia, have not gone 0-3 since 2000-01. They are opening a four-game road trip that also includes stops in Dallas, Nashville and Colorado.

Calgary won 13 games away from home last season, the fewest of any team that qualified for the playoffs.

The Flames have struggled to kill off penalties, allowing their opponents to score five goals on 18 chances with the man advantage. The Canucks scored each of their goals Saturday on the power play, including one at 4:47 of overtime.

Last season, the Flames killed off 80.4 percent of their opponents' powers plays, ranking them just 22nd in the league. Detroit (2-0-1), meanwhile, has scored four power-play goals on 19 chances this season.

"To give up four power-play goals tonight, it's an issue we'll certainly have to address," Calgary coach Mike Keenan said.

Daymond Langkow has been Calgary's offensive sparkplug so far, scoring two goals in both games. Alex Tanguay leads the team with three assists, and had a goal and five assists in four games against Detroit last season.

The Flames and Red Wings split their four games in 2006-07, with each team winning twice on its own ice.

Detroit has won both of its home games this season, including Monday's 4-2 victory over Edmonton. The Red Wings, who beat Anaheim 3-2 in a shootout at home in their season opener on Oct. 3, host Chicago on Friday before heading out on a four-game road trip.

Tomas Holmstrom scored on the power play against the Oilers and has a goal in each of the Red Wings' three games. Henrik Zetterberg had two assists, and has a goal and six assists so far this season.

"It's always nice to get some points on the board," Zetterberg said. "I've had some easy assists."

Chris Chelios, the NHL's oldest player at 45, played in his 1,550th game, breaking a tie with Hall of Famer Alex Delvecchio to move into eighth place on the career list. He also scored his first regular-season goal in 77 games dating to April 8, 2006.

The Red Wings, who blew a 3-1 lead in the third period of Saturday's shootout loss in Chicago, had more defensive problems against the Oilers. They allowed both goals on rushes in which two Detroit skaters went to the same area of the ice in their own end and left the eventual goal scorer wide open.

"Defensively, we have to do a better job of sorting out our own end," said Nicklas Lidstrom, who had two assists.

Forward Johan Franzen missed his first game after spraining his knee against the Blackhawks. Franzen, who had 10 goals and 30 points last season, is expected to be sidelined three to four weeks.
