CHICAGO (AP) -- Mired in a 14-game winless slump, the Chicago Blackhawks figured they were long overdue for some good fortune.

Mark Bell scored 15 seconds into overtime to give the Blackhawks a 4-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night, and their first victory since Nov. 7. They were 0-9-2-3 during their slump.

"That was a pretty big monkey to get off our back," Bell said. "I just tried to get (the puck) on net. I threw it there and it found the back of the net."

Bell slid a shot past Curtis Joseph with one hand despite being pulled down by defenseman Jason Woolley as he skated down the slot.

Joseph started in goal for the second straight night, but played in only his seventh game this year. He stopped 22 shots. Joseph had cleared waivers and was loaned to Grand Rapids of the AHL last Saturday. He was recalled Tuesday after Dominik Hasek was sidelined with sore groin and Manny Legace suffered a knee injury.

"It got away and we both reached for it," Joseph said of Bell's game-winner. "He just got to it before me, that's all. It's all about the timing."

Brendan Shanahan scored with 1:08 left in the third period and Joseph on the bench for an extra attacker to tie it for the Red Wings and send it to overtime.

"We played so hard. We just wanted to keep it going," Chicago coach Brian Sutter said of the team's mood after Shanahan's goal. "They made a great play; give them credit. And we got a break, too. It was the first one we got in a long time."

Chicago rookie Tuomo Ruutu scored with 6:31 left in regulation to give the Blackhawks a 3-2 lead. Tyler Arnason and Igor Radulov also scored for the Blackhawks.

Detroit's Kris Draper and Pavel Datsyuk scored as the Red Wings rallied from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game early in the third period.

"I thought our guys played a hard second and third period and it was a good point for us," Detroit coach Dave Lewis said.

Chicago rookie goalie Michael Leighton stopped 30 shots. He won only his second game this season and for the first time since Nov. 2 versus Anaheim.

Leighton and the Blackhawks also won for the first time since number-one goalie Jocelyn Thibault was sidelined by a hip injury.

"It's been a long time since we've had that good feeling," Leighton said. "It's nice to have it back.

The last time a Blackhawks' winless streak reached 14 games -- in 1959-60 -- they snapped it with a 5-3 win over Detroit on Nov. 15, 1959.

The Blackhawks used a pair of close-in deflections to take a 2-0 lead in the first period.

Arnason opened the scoring 3:47 in when he tipped Brett McLean's feed over Joseph's glove from the left edge of the crease.

Radulov made it 2-0 with 4:00 left in the first with a backhand redirection of Igor Korolev's pass.

Draper cut it to 2-1 with 4:03 left in the second.

Datsyuk tied it 2-all at 4:51 of the third, converting his own rebound. Leighton stopped Datsyuk's first shot from 15 feet. Datsyuk then slid a fluttering shot under Leighton's glove.

Ruutu's goal put Chicago ahead 3-2 with 6:51 left.

With Joseph pulled for an extra attacker, Shanahan rifled a one-time shot from the left circle over Leighton's blocker to tie it 3-3.
