DETROIT (AP) - An early two-goal deficit wasn't enough to rattle the Calgary Flames.

The Flames rallied by wearing down Detroit's defensemen, and Tony Amonte scored the tiebreaker 19 seconds into the third period to lead Calgary to a 3-2 win over the Red Wings.

``We stuck to our game plan: Go in and get the puck behind the 'D' and wear their defense down,'' said Chuck Kobasew, who had a goal and an assist.

Daymond Langkow also had a goal and an assist for the Flames, who outshot Detroit 36-20.

Henrik Zetterberg and Tomas Holmstrom scored for Detroit, and Jason Williams added two assists.

``We got a lesson at home, we're not used to that,'' Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. ``It's one we're going to have to learn from.''

Red Wings defenseman Mathieu Schneider gave the puck away at the Calgary blue line, giving Amonte a breakaway. He beat Detroit goaltender Jim Howard with a forehand shot.

``Got a lucky play,'' Amonte said. ``Seemed that Schneider overskated the puck and I was able to capitalize.''

Calgary tied the score with two second-period goals.

Langkow scored for the Flames 9:36 into the second period, when his deflection from the side of the net went in off Howard's pads.

Kobasew tied the game with a power-play goal with 5:38 left in the period, off another giveaway by Schneider. He scored on a backhander from the bottom of the right circle for his 10th goal of the season.

Langkow and Kobasew each got assists on the other's goal. They were put on the same line for Thursday night's game.

``Keeping it simple. We worked it hard down low,'' Langkow said. ``We said we wanted to take the puck to the net and that's what we did.''

Calgary outshot Detroit 18-5 in the period.

``They played well in the second period,'' Williams said. ``They got the puck behind us and were moving their feet ... They were a step faster than us.''

The Red Wings took a 2-0 lead in the first period on two power-play goals.

Zetterberg opened the scoring with 9:30 left in the first by taking a pass from Pavel Datsyuk and beating Mikka Kiprusoff from the bottom of the right circle. Holmstrom made it 2-0 with 5:57 remaining when he batted a loose puck out of the air and into the net.

The Red Wings had a two-man advantage for 1:39 earlier in the period, but didn't get a shot on goal.

``The key of the game was our ability to kill the 5-on-3,'' Flames coach Darryl Sutter said.

Note: Detroit C Robert Lang missed the game with a groin injury. ... Calgary had gone 103 minutes, 2 seconds without a goal before Langkow scored in the second period. ... The Flames' Shean Donovan failed to convert a penalty shot with 1:11 left. He never got a shot off against Howard, who has faced a penalty shot in each of his two NHL starts. He allowed a goal to Joe Corvo on a penalty shot in his NHL debut in Los Angeles on Monday night. According to the Red Wings' P.R. department, it is the first time in modern NHL history that a goaltender has faced penalty shots in his first two NHL games.
