DETROIT (AP) - The Detroit Red Wings slowly skated to Manny Legace, tapping his pads with their sticks as if it was an ordinary victory - not the one clinching the best record in the NHL.

Legace made 29 saves and Kris Draper and Donald MacLean scored to help Detroit beat the Edmonton Oilers 2-0 on Tuesday night.

The Presidents' Trophy-winning Red Wings, with 118 points, will have home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs.

"I don't think you saw much celebrating because the big mug is what we're after, not the Presidents' Trophy," said Legace, whose seven shutouts this season are the most for a Detroit goalie since 1965-66.

Home-ice advantage didn't give Detroit much of an edge during the NHL's previous season when the Red Wings were knocked out early in the 2004 playoffs by Calgary, in 1996 or 1995. It did lead to the Red Wings winning the Stanley Cup in 2002.

"It doesn't matter unless you play well," Legace said.

Edmonton is clinging to eighth in the Western Conference standings - two points ahead of idle Vancouver - for the final playoff spot after winning just two of its last six games.

"You can't dwell on it now," forward Ryan Smyth said. "We've got two games left. We just dug ourselves a deeper hole and we've got to dig out of it."

The Oilers close the regular season at home against Anaheim and Colorado.

Since the NHL started awarding the Presidents' Trophy in 1986, the Red Wings have won it five times - in 11 seasons - and no other team has won it more than two times. Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman will be presented with the trophy before Detroit's regular-season home finale against Dallas on Monday.

"For us, it's one step on the journey," general manager Ken Holland said.

Dwayne Roloson made 25 saves for the Oilers.

Legace made some spectacular stops, including a kick save just before the second period ended. Edmonton challenged him often in the final period, but couldn't get a shot past Legace, who has emerged as Detroit's No. 1 goalie ahead of Chris Osgood.

Oilers coach Craig MacTavish was bitter after the setback, coming off a 2-1 loss at St. Louis.

"I still believe wholly that it's a product more of our undoing rather than either team taking it to us and beating us," MacTavish said.

MacLean scored on a rebound 10 minutes into the game, his first with the Red Wings this season, and 30th NHL game of his career. He played in place of Robert Lang, who was out with an upper-body injury after being recalled from Detroit's minor-league team in Grand Rapids.

"I got a call on my way to practice this morning, and it took me about 4 hours to get here because I got lost a couple of times," MacLean said. "But I got here, and I was glad that I was able to help out."

Draper scored on a wrist shot from the right circle early in the third period.

Notes: Detroit's Pavel Datsyuk (lower body) missed his third straight game and Mathieu Schneider (groin) was out for a sixth game in a row. ... In a Motor City moment, a Toyota SUV was booed as it made a lap on the ice during a promotion. ... Roger Crozier is the last Detroit goalie to have seven shutouts in a season. ... Legace has 13 career shutouts. ... Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said he doesn't expect to play his regulars less or to sit them out in the final four games. Some Red Wings are injured and the NHL's new collective bargaining agreement limits teams' ability to recall players from the minor leagues at this point in the season.
