DETROIT (AP) -Brendan Morrison's hard work is starting to pay off.

Morrison scored his second goal of the game 3:01 into overtime and Vancouver overcame a two-goal deficit to beat the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 Wednesday night.

Morrison has struggled this season, with only six goals and five assists in 22 games.

"I'm really happy for Brendan. Things haven't gone the way he would have wanted it to go," Vancouver coach Alain Vigneault said. "He stayed focused. By his hard work he was able to give us two huge goals tonight."

Ryan Kesler and Markus Naslund also scored for Vancouver, and Roberto Luongo made 27 saves.

Mathieu Schneider, Nicklas Lidstrom and Dan Cleary had goals for Detroit, and Dominik Hasek stopped 26 shots.

Detroit defenseman Chris Chelios tied Phil Housley for most games played by an American-born player (1,495).

Morrison took a pass from Sami Salo for a breakaway from the blue line and beat Hasek with a shot through the pads.

"Of course I'm especially disappointed," Hasek said. "They scored on the first shot and they scored on the last shot of overtime and they won the game."

Morrison tied it with a 5-on-3 power-play goal 7:23 into the third period. He fired a shot over a prone Hasek, who had lost an edge and fell, from the bottom of the right circle.

Naslund got his 11th goal earlier in the third period on a rebound of a shot by Henrik Sedin to cut it to 3-2.

"It was key for sure. To get that early goal was nice," Sedin said. "Then the 5-on-3 right after that. Those are times when you have to score. We got a great forecheck going and I had a chance to get a shot on net and Naslund put it upstairs. It was a goal scorer's goal."

The goal was caused by a turnover by Cleary about 25 seconds earlier as the play was coming out of the Detroit zone.

"We turned the puck over too much, took too many penalties, and it cost us," Cleary said. "We did it to ourselves, bottom line. No way we should lose that game. We gave up too many shots. That's just it."

The Canucks outshot the Red Wings 17-9 in the third period.

"We knew the second period wasn't our best period," Kesler said. "Together as a group we tried to figure out what was going on and we figured it out in the third."

He opened the scoring just 18 seconds in when his one-timer from the top of the right circle beat Hasek. Detroit tied it when Schneider knocked the puck in out of midair off a goalmouth scramble.

Lidstrom gave the Red Wings the lead with a power-play goal later in the opening period, when the rebound of his shot from the point bounced in off the skate of Vancouver defenseman Mattias Ohlund.

Cleary made it 3-1 with a minute left in the second period with a backhand shot over Luongo after Cleary retrieved his own rebound from beside the net.

Just 35 seconds earlier, an apparent goal by Red Wings forward Mikael Samuelsson was waved off because of "incidental contact in the crease." Ohlund was pushing Tomas Holmstrom into Luongo when Samuelsson fired in the puck.

Notes: Detroit LW Johan Franzen suffered a concussion on a shoulder to the jaw from Vancouver D Willie Mitchell in the first period. Mitchell got an interference penalty. Babcock also said Franzen's knee was checked out. He is day to day. ... Red Wings' D Niklas Kronwall and RW Holmstrom both returned after missing three games with groin injuries. ... Kesler is a native of the Detroit suburb of Livonia. ... One of Joe Louis Arena's entrances was dedicated as "The Gordie Howe Entrance" before the game. The Hall of Famer was also in attendance. ... Cleary stretched his points streak to seven games (6-4-10), which ties a career high.
