DETROIT (AP) -The Detroit Red Wings' sleeping power play appears to have woken up.
Henrik Zetterberg and Mikael Samuelsson each scored two of Detroit's season-high, five power-play goals and added an assist in the Red Wings' 5-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night.
Dan Cleary had a goal and an assist for Detroit, which won its fifth in six games. Mathieu Schneider and Pavel Datsyuk each added three assists, and Tomas Holmstrom had two. Dominik Hasek stopped 21 shots.
The Red Wings, ranked 27th on the power play in the NHL, have scored 10 man-advantage goals in 10 games.
"Earlier in the year our power play was pretty good," Detroit coach Mike Babcock. "It went into the tank and then we were playing well, but the puck wasn't going in."
Bryan McCabe scored for Toronto, which lost its seventh in a row.
"On the penalty kill, we didn't get the job done," Maple Leafs coach Paul Maurice said. "In the end, their power play was too good."
The Maple Leafs tried to play an aggressive game, but paid for it by taking 14 penalties.
The Red Wings led 2-0 after the first period.
Samuelsson put a cross-crease pass into the open side of the net at 9:53 and Zetterberg tapped in a loose puck with 2:44 left in the period.
Samuelsson's second goal made it 3-0 with 9:18 remaining in the second period. He beat Andrew Raycroft with a wrist shot from the high slot.
McCabe got Toronto on the board with a power-play goal with 7:56 remaining in the middle period, beating Hasek with a one-timed shot from the slot.
But Zetterberg's second goal, with only 1.6 seconds left in the period, restored Detroit's three-goal lead. He got his 11th goal by putting in a loose puck off of a goal-mouth scramble.
"They took a lot of penalties and we capitalized," Zetterberg said.
Cleary's 10th goal came 1:15 into the third period.
"They made some good plays and got some fortunate bounces," Toronto forward Michael Peca said.
