Red Wings 3, Wild 1
Minnesota Wild 1, Detroit Red Wings 3

DETROIT (AP) -Dominik Hasek was busier than usual on Friday night.

The Red Wings goalie faced 35 shots, the most he's faced this year as Detroit was outshot for only the sixth time this season. Hasek stopped 34 of them, and Dan Cleary broke a tie with a short-handed goal in the second period to help Detroit beat the Minnesota Wild 3-1.

Henrik Zetterberg and Nicklas Lidstrom also scored for the Red Wings.

Stephane Veilleux scored for Minnesota, and Manny Fernandez stopped 22 shots. The Wild are 0-7-1 in their last eight road games.

"It's the first time this year that I've really felt tired after the game," Hasek said. "They just kept coming."

Detroit coach Mike Babcock said his team didn't play well.

"We weren't very good tonight," he said. "So it was nice to see us get the points and nice to see Dom play that way."

Detroit scored twice in the second period.

Cleary made it 2-1 at the 9:10 mark. With Kris Draper in the penalty box for holding, Cleary put a one-time shot from the slot past Fernandez for his team-leading 14th goal. The Minnesota goalie flubbed a pass, allowing Johan Franzen to pick the puck up behind the Wild net.

"They're a team if you turn it over and make a bad play like that they'll be all over you," said Fernandez. "That set the tone. Right there it seemed like it took our wind right out and changed the momentum of the game."

Cleary knew what he was going to do before he got the puck.

"If he got the puck to me, I knew the shot had to be quick," he said. "Get it up and glove side."

Lidstrom made it 3-1 with 1:47 left in the period, beating Fernandez with a slap shot from the high slot for his ninth goal.

"We played well enough to keep it close. We couldn't capitalize. It was the difference," said Minnesota defenseman Keith Carney. "Mistakes shouldn't affect us like they have. You want to limit them. But that's the way the game is. They made a lot of them too, but they capitalized on ours."

Zetterberg opened the scoring with a wraparound goal, his 13th, 4 minutes into the game. But Minnesota tied it on a goal by Veilleux with 5:10 left in the first period. His shot from about 50 feet deflected off the skate of the Red Wings' Chris Chelios and then bounced over Hasek's blocker.

Notes: Detroit D Mathieu Schneider had an assist to stretch his point streak to 12 games. He has two goals and 13 assists during the streak, the longest in the NHL this season. It also is the longest streak by a defenseman since Brian Leetch's 14-game run in 1996-97. ... This is the first of three consecutive games for Detroit against Minnesota. The teams are scheduled to play in Minnesota on Saturday night and in Detroit again on Wednesday night. The Wild play Toronto on Tuesday night ... Veilleux left the game late in the second period after being hit on the nose by the puck. Minnesota coach Jacques Lemaire said: "Don't count on him for a while. His nose was right here (pointing to the side of his face)." ... Detroit RW Mikael Samuelsson missed his third game because of a groin injury.
