CHICAGO (AP) -Patrick Kane beat one of his boyhood heroes on Saturday night to lift the Chicago Blackhawks to their first victory of the season.

Kane scored the only goal in the shootout off Dominik Hasek, giving the Blackhawks a 4-3 win after they trailed 3-1 entering the third period.

Kane, the first overall pick in this year's NHL draft, beat Hasek with a backhand shot on the glove side. Kane got his first career point with an assist in regulation.

The 18-year-old Kane, who grew up in Buffalo, N.Y., grew up idolizing Hasek.

"The next thing you know I'm going down against him in a shootout," Kane said. "Time flies by, but it's unbelievable I scored my first goal - and it's not really a goal - on Dominik Hasek, the guy I used to grow up watching."

Not bad for his second NHL game.

"It's been a whirlwind couple of months," Kane said. "It was a great night for me and I had fun out there, too."

Chicago coach Denis Savard had no reservations about sending out Kane as the Blackhawks' first skater in the shootout.

"He's a special kid," Savard said. "He's a kid who thrives under pressure and he wants to be the guy."

Hasek graciously gave Kane credit.

"What can I say, he was better than me today," Hasek said. "He made a nice shot to the backhand.

"I was expecting a (different) shot and was closing the five-hole and he made the backhand shot," Hasek added. "Still, it's disappointing to lose when you're up 3-1 in the third period."

Robert Lang, signed as a free agent during the offseason, scored his first goal for Chicago with 3:40 left in the third to tie the game and set up overtime. Lang beat Hasek with a high shot from the right circle.

Tuomo Ruutu and James Wisniewski also scored in regulation for the Blackhawks.

Detroit defensemen Brian Rafalski and Nicklas Lidstrom each had a goal and an assist. Tomas Holmstrom also scored for the Red Wings, 18-1-4 in their last 23 games against Chicago. Detroit's Henrik Zetterberg assisted on all three Detroit goals in regulation, twice by winning faceoffs in the Blackhawks zone.

"We got away from our game a little in the third period, but they were playing some desperate hockey," Lidstrom said.

Rafalski's goal was his first with the Red Wings after signed a five-year deal as a free agent in July.

Hasek finished with 24 saves. Chicago's Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 23 shots.

Detroit's Johan Franzen had to be helped from the ice at 6:58 of the second period after colliding with Ruutu and suffering a right knee injury. Team officials said Franzen will be examined on Sunday and is out day-to-day.

Rafalski's power-play goal opened the scoring goal at 5:37 of the first. He beat Khabibulin from the top of the left circle.

Lidstrom made it 2-0 during a 4-on-4 1:39 into the second. He fired in a shot through traffic from the left point from a faceoff in the Chicago zone.

Ruutu cut it to 2-1 at 9:43 of the period, jamming a shot past Hasek from the edge of the crease after taking a feed from Magnus Johansson.

Holmstrom's power-play tip-in at 10:55 of the second made it 3-1. He deflected Rafalski's shot from the left point following a faceoff.

Wisniewski's short-handed goal at 3:41 of the third cut it to 3-2. He swept a shot just inside the left post after taking a cross-ice pass from Kevyn Adams.

With 11 seconds left in overtime, Hasek made point-blank save on Chicago's Patrick Sharp.

Notes: A brief pregame tribute to former Blackhawks president William W. Wirtz, who died on Sept. 27, was booed by many of the 18,768 in attendance. During the ceremony, Blackhawks general manager Dale Tallon saluted Wirtz as "one of the last true sportsmen of our time" from a podium at center ice, while Chicago players circled the team's Indian Head logo. ... Chicago RW Martin Havlat missed the game after suffering a right shoulder injury in the team's opener at Minnesota on Thursday and is out indefinitely. Havlat's shoulder, which has previously has been surgically repaired, will be re-examined later this week before treatment is determined. ... Blackhawks rookie C Jonathan Toews missed his second game with a broken finger, but is expected to play this week. Chicago D Andrei Zyuzin missed his second game with a groin injury, but is expected to play Wednesday. ... Detroit D Chris Chelios, 45, played in his 1,549th game, tying him for eighth in all-time games-played with former Wings icon Alex Delvecchio. ... Red Wings C Kyle Quincey missed his second game with a broken left hand and will be out 2-3 weeks.
