DETROIT -- Chris Osgood’s first start of the season found him a first foe of the year in Calgary forward Kristian Huselius. But Osgood prevailed stopping 18 of 20 shots, and helping Detroit improve to 3-0-1 on the young season with a 4-2 victory on Wednesday night.

Osgood started for goalie Dominik Hasek, who participated in Wednesday's morning skate, but did not play because of a bruise above his left kneecap suffered in the Red Wings' win over Edmonton on Monday.

"It was a good start, guys protected me well, I got some flurries, so it was good, the next game I'll feel a lot better," said Osgood, who stopped 19 of 21 shots. "Today it was a matter of battling and getting a win."

During the first power play of the game, Flames goalie Miikka Kiprusoff made the mistake of sending the puck up the middle of the ice. Wings center Pavel Datsyuk picked-off the pass then sent a cross-ice feed to Henrik Zetterberg, who scored the Wings' sixth power play goal of the season. The Wings are now 7-for-21 with the man-advantage this season.

The goal also gave Zetterberg his eighth point, and tied him for the league lead. He now has at least one point in all four games.

"We knew this week was going to be real tough for us, and it's real important for us to get all the points we can get here at home," said Zetterberg, referring to the Wings' stretch of five games in eight days.

Huselius then helped rally the Flames and beat Osgood on a 2-on-1 breakaway, earning his first goal of the season, and knotting the game at one goal a piece at 13:21 of the first period.

Tomas Holmstrom scored early in the second for Detroit’s second goal. Brian Rafalski and Datsyuk assisted on Holmstrom's fourth goal in four games.

Huselius again led the Flames' charge when unassisted, he banked one off of Osgood, tying the game at 2-2.

On a delayed penalty call, Wings center Kris Draper tipped in Andreas Lilja’s shot. Dallas Drake tallied his first point of the season with an assist on the play.

Osgood then made several key saves to keep the lead for the Red Wings going into the third period.

Mikael Samuelsson’s shot late in the third scored the second power play goal of the game, and sealed the victory. Detroit was 2-for-3 with the man-advantage.

"We're off to a good start, but a good start is measured after 20 games," Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "What you do by winning in the first 20 is you earn the right to be confident, and then you find a way to win games."

Osgood denied Huselius his third goal late in the game, and kept him from scoring the first hat trick against Detroit at home since 2003. The last hat trick allowed by the Wings occurred on November 13, 2005 when Todd Bertuzzi netted three for Vancouver. The last home trick by a visiting player was October 29, 2003 by Doug Weight of the St. Louis Blues.

GAME NOTES: Former Michigan defenseman and Redford (Mich.) Catholic Central alumni David Moss was back in the line-up for Calgary after missing the first two games with a shoulder injury. . . . The Wings will put their perfect home record on the line when the host the Chicago Blackhawks this Friday at JLA.
