DETROIT — For almost two periods, it looked like Chicago Blackhawks rookie goalie Corey Crawford was going to stand between Detroit and its first four-game winning streak in over a month.

Only one puck in 26 shots had made it past Crawford. He didn’t flinch on a Wings' five-minute power play, either.
WINGS CORNER

Not to mention the 23-year-old netminder pitched a shutout in his first NHL win last week.

Finally, with less than five-minutes remaining in the second period, the Red Wings beat Crawford once more.

Blackhawks defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson could have passed it up the boards to safety, but instead tried a cross-zone pass. Jiri Hudler deflected the puck to open ice, where Pavel Datsyuk picked up the play and ripped a shot blocker side on Crawford.

But Crawford didn’t face the shot head-on. Datsyuk’s shot hit Chicago defenseman Brent Seabrook, and the puck redirected past Crawford’s glove. That’s all it took — Detroit beat Chicago for only the second time in six tries this season, 3-1, at Joe Louis Arena.

Crawford turned aside 45 of 47 shots, and stopped Datsyuk twice from close range in the third period to keep the Blackhawks within striking distance the entire game.

“He played real well for them,” Nicklas Lidstrom said. “Even the shots he didn’t see he came up with the first save. I think on Pavel’s goal, it got deflected by their defenseman. I thought he played a real solid game to keep them in the game and give them a chance to win.”

The teams traded goals midway through the first period. While falling to the ice, Kirk Maltby one-timed Dallas Drake’s pass into the net for the 1-0 lead at 8:34 of the first. Rene Bourque scored Chicago’s lone goal two minutes later. Johan Franzen extended his goal-scoring streak to four straight when he popped in an empty-netter.

For Drake, who was playing in his 1,000th career game Tuesday, his assist was No. 300. Could Drake make it to 1500 games?

“Uh no,” Drake said. “You guys might end up finding me in the beer league then.”

Wings goalie Chris Osgood picked up his first win since Feb. 18 when he shut out Colorado. Dominik Hasek had started the previous four games for Detroit.

Osgood’s best came with the score deadlocked at one. He stopped former Red Wing Robert Lang on a penalty shot midway through the second period.

“That was huge,” Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "Obviously, they hadn’t had a whole lot of the play and suddenly they can be up 2-1 going into the break. I thought that was a huge save by Ozzie at a real important part of the game.”

With the win, the Red Wings (46-18-6) are just two points away from an eighth consecutive 100-point season.

GAME NOTES: Chris Chelios returned to the Wings' lineup after missing the past six games with a chipped right fibula. … It was the first time since Jan. 30 that defensemen Niklas Kronwall, Nicklas Lidstrom, Brian Rafalski and Chelios all played.
