DETROIT -- The Red Wings have six regular forwards out of the lineup, but they have center Pavel Datsyuk in uniform.
It's a good thing too. Datsyuk took charge late in the third period of a game against the Calgary Flames on Thursday night at Joe Louis Arena, helping the Red Wings end a six-game winless streak with a 3-2 overtime victory.
As he dominated the puck in his final shift in regulation, Datsyuk drew a hooking penalty on Calgary defenseman TJ Brodie with 42 seconds left. Daniel Alfredsson capitalized on the ensuing power play 1:03 into OT with his second goal of the game to win it for Detroit, which improved to 6-9-6 on home ice.
The 41-year old Alfredsson, who scored the game's first goal and had one overturned by video review in the second, blasted a slap shot from the top of the slot that Flames goalie Karri Ramo couldn't stop, sending Red Wings fans home happy. The win ended Detroit's streak of five straight home losses in regulation.
Joakim Andersson scored the other goal for Detroit, and Jonas Gustavsson made 20 saves in picking up the win. Mikael Backlund and Mark Giordano scored for Calgary, which hasn't won in three straight games.
The lively end boards in Detroit played a role in the game's first two goals.
Detroit took a 1-0 lead 26 seconds into the game on Alfredsson's eighth goal, which he smacked home from the low slot off a juicy rebound created by Datsyuk's shot from the right circle. The scoring chance was created when Niklas Kronwall's shot hit the boards behind the Calgary net and skipped right to Datsyuk for the shot.
Less than five minutes later, Backlund tied it after the puck caromed right to him at the right of the Detroit net following a shot by Mike Cammalleri from the left circle. It was his fifth.
Backlund got just enough of the puck to send it past Gustavsson, who couldn't go post to post fast enough. The Red Wings goalie only faced three more shots in the first period and stopped them all, but one of them was off a shorthanded breakaway by Backlund.
Ramo was busier in the opening period. Detroit outshot Calgary 15-6 in the first thanks in part to a pair of man-advantage situations.
In the second, each team again scored a goal to keep it knotted 2-2 at the second intermission break.
Andersson put the Red Wings up 2-1 at 11:38 with his fifth goal, which came on Alfredsson's 700th career assist. Less than a minute later, at 12:52, Alfredsson appeared to put Detroit up 3-1 by chipping a puck over Ramo's head and into the net, but the goal was overturned by video review that showed the puck never fully crossed the goal line before Ramo trapped it on the ice. Momentum turned quickly after the overturned goal, and the Flames tied the game a little more than three minutes later.
Detroit was called for three minor penalties less than two minutes apart to give Calgary a 5-on-3 situation that wound up lasting 1:44 and led to Giordano's goal.
Just seven seconds after Brendan Smith exited the penalty box to make it a 5-on-4, Giordano knotted it 2-2 by roofing a blast from the slot past Gustavsson's glove.
Ramo preserved the tie at 6:46 of the third when he was able to get his glove over the puck just in the nick of time to freeze it at the left post after Jordin Tootoo's backhander from a scramble trickled between the goalie's pads.
