DETROIT -- The St. Louis Blues didn't look past the injury-plagued Red Wings on Monday at Joe Louis Arena.

Instead, the Blues took it to their former Central Division rivals in a 4-1 victory that featured three goals by defensemen.

St. Louis (33-10-5), which won for the third straight time in Detroit, had lost two in a row and three of four following a seven-game winning streak.

Defensemen Barret Jackman, Kevin Shattenkirk and Jay Bouwmeester all scored for the Blues, who also got a goal from Magnus Paajarvi at 11:13 of the first period to open the scoring.

Alexander Steen finished with two assists to lead 10 Blues players who recorded at least a point, and goaltender Jaroslav Halak improved to 20-7-3 by stopping 22 of 23 shots.

Meanwhile, Detroit added another starter to its lengthy list of injured players. Goalie Jimmy Howard (22 saves), who missed eight games in December with a sprained knee, left the game with an undisclosed lower-body injury at 10:44 of the second period and didn't return.

Backup Petr Mrazek made 13 saves in relief of Howard.

St. Louis came into the game struggling to score goals of late, but it was the Red Wings who had offensive issues Monday night. Detroit was outshot 39-23 and went 1-for-6 on the power play, including a fruitless 5-on-3 in the second.

The Red Wings' power-play goal came with 27 seconds left in the first, off the stick of Gustav Nyquist, to tie it 1-1 heading into the second.

Paajarvi gave the Blues a 1-0 lead at 11:13 of the first, 2:45 after a great glove save by Halak nixed a one-timer from close range by Todd Bertuzzi.

Howard's aggression left him slightly out of position, and Paajarvi made him pay. The Blues forward collected the puck behind the net and banked a backhand wraparound attempt into the net off the right leg pad of Howard, who had just slid back into the crease.

Detroit, which got outshot in the first period 18-7, rallied late in the first and eventually got the equalizer by Nyquist, who scored his first goal since Dec. 28 by cleaning up Henrik Zetterberg's rebound from the low slot.

The goal capped Detroit's second of three power plays in the first, making the Blues pay for Roman Polak's cross-checking minor 35 seconds into it. The Red Wings went right back on the power play 13 seconds after Nyquist's goal, when David Backes was called for holding, but couldn't take the lead.

That's when the Blues seized control and never looked back.

St. Louis took a 3-1 lead on quick goals by Jackman and Shattenkirk to start the second, with each beating Howard to the left side of the net off a long shot through traffic.

Steen, who assisted on each goal, screened Howard on Jackman's slap shot from the high slot 1:01 into the second to make it 2-1, and Backes stood in front of Howard 1:20 later during a power play, blocking the goalie's sight line as Shattenkirk ripped a shot into the net for the two-goal cushion.

Howard left the game about eight minutes later. Mrazek, who is up from Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League because regular backup Jonas Gustavsson is out with a groin injury, finished the game and allowed Bouwmeester's goal at 2:14 of the third.

The goal reflected the kind of night it was for Detroit, after Bouwmeester flipped a point shot that went wide to the far side but bounced off the leg of Red Wings center Riley Sheahan into the net.
